NC Marriage License Requirements
  • If aged 18+, bring the following to any Register of Deeds office in North Carolina
    • $60 in cash, a valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, certified birth certificate), & social security card
    • If previously married, the divorce date or date of spouse's death must be provided. Documentation is only required if applying for a license within 60 days of divorce or spousal death.

  • There is not a waiting period to obtain a marriage license; you may use it immediately upon receipt.
  • Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days.
  • You don't have to be a North Carolina resident.
  • Valid NC marriage licenses can be used in any county (e.g., if you live in Wake County but are getting married in Buncombe County, you can apply for the license in Wake and use it in Buncombe).
  • A blood test is not required.
